The Capitol Riots – Where do we go from here?

By Dan Sockle on January 8, 2021 • ( Leave a comment )

While seemingly unprepared and overwhelmed authorities try to sort out yesterday’s events at the U.S. Capitol, we once again have to rely on the various news and information sources who have contributed […]

Does the end really justify the means?

By Dan Sockle on December 29, 2020 • ( Leave a comment )

Right, Left, or somewhere in between, Americans were once united behind the foundational ideals and importance of fairness, integrity, transparency, accountability and, more often than not, rooting for the underdog. Sadly, no, […]

Beyond struggling, is America imploding?

By Dan Sockle on February 11, 2019 • ( 1 Comment )

We should all take a deep breath and rethink our individual and collective fixation on arguably our most outwardly-flawed POTUS. If one excluded Los Angeles and New York City, most Americans who […]

Hey “Patriots!”

By Dan Sockle on January 10, 2021 • ( Leave a comment )

I hope that I am speaking for most veterans of the military and/or law enforcement. To those of you who stormed the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, many or most of […]

We must overcome anti-Trump fever to restore bipartisan problem-solving

By Dan Sockle on January 5, 2020 • ( Leave a comment )

Hyper-partisan tribalism, polarization and division were alive and well in America well before Donald Trump was the nominee, elected or even took office. He is hardly the “Uniter-in-Chief” we needed (neither was […]

Let us support and PROTECT Free Speech

“The Enemy Within” (you and me)

By Dan Sockle on April 5, 2018 • ( Leave a comment )

An important and worthwhile read. April 03, 2018 Why do we have so much difficulty talking with people who are of an opposing political orientation? If we were all honorable, in any […]

#NeverAgain and #YesSheCan exposing more of our political federal and state-level “Swamps”

By Dan Sockle on March 1, 2018 • ( 4 Comments )

Now THIS gives me hope that our multi-level political SWAMP just might be shamed into constructive and meaningful bi-partisan legislation – and (potentially) even more changes that serve America, and Americans, first […]

Calling all Rotarians, those with similar values – and frustrations

By Dan Sockle on December 18, 2016 • ( Leave a comment )

Enough of the blame-gaming fallout from the November 8 election. Let’s get on with ending the divisiveness that started decades ago.

Deconstructing “Jihad”

To most Muslims, "Jihad" has three meanings, or levels: First, there is "Jihad e Akbar," or the "Greatest Jihad," which is the lifelong struggle with self to resist temptation and, essentially, to always "Do the Right Thing;" Second is "Jihad e Kabeer," which is to extend those values to family, neighbors and community, essentially live by "The Golden Rule;" Third, "Jihad e Asghar" is emphatically the last resort - to physically defend yourself/family/community is justified only to the extent of neutralizing the threat(s). In other words, there is no terrorism or "Holy War" version of "Jihad" among the genuinely moderate... Read On..

Intro to America’s “Jihad”

America’s Jihad is part of a Global struggle … Both individually and collectively, we are struggling over our values and the extent to which we are willing to engage our "world," however large or small that might be. This goes on throughout our lives. The "Jihad" dominating headlines today is our struggle to understand Islam vs. Islamism, or the religion vs. the radicalized ideology being exercised by extremists. Just as non-Muslims struggle to understand Islam, so do the majority of the approximately 1.6 billion Muslims around the globe. Read On...

Rules of Engagement

  • Be courteous and constructive – keep it civil.
  • Project respect if you want to be respected.
  • Bring your “A game” - which starts with an open mind.
  • Ask and probe without attacking.
  • Try first to find and focus on your shared values and common interests.
  • Challenge positions with the intent to achieve mutual understanding.
  • Avoid being “offended,” “annoyed,” or “aggrieved” as this impedes our ability to listen and learn.
None of the above requires “Political Correctness” – one of our greatest obstacles to problem-solving.
